Monkeypox Virus Can Spread To Everybody Through Close Contact.

Monkeypox Virus Can Spread To Everybody Through Close Contact.

Infectious Diseases specialists have ruled out the claim that Monkeypox is a sexually transmitted disease among Gay Men only. The claim has been classified as wrong and unscientific. Recently Infectious disease specialists told USA TODAY that Monkeypox can infect anyone and the assumption that it only infects specifically gay men is wrong and based upon unsound reasoning.

The National Public Health Agency of the United States, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), has reported 13,517 confirmed Monkeypox cases in the United States with New York having the highest number of cases, 2675.

Virus Can Infect Anyone

“You don’t want to send a message that this will only affect gay men.’’, said Dr. Tom Frieden. It is true that many reported  Monkeypox have originated from males having sexual intercourse with males.“About 99% of cases are among men, and at least 95% of those patients are men who have sex with men”, Rosamund Lewis, the WHO’s Monkeypox expert, said.

“We’ve learned many times over the decades that sexual networks are not fixed,”Dr. Matthew M. Hamill said. “We’ve seen that numerous times…(for example) where in the early and mid 80s, (HIV) was seen as an infection that only affected gay men. We quickly learned that was of course not true. There are many other people who are affected”. While the outbreak at the moment has significantly  infected the LGBTQ community, that is going to change in the near future, he said.

How The Virus Actually Spreads?.

Dr. Richard Martinello, an infectious disease specialist at Yale Medicine, said that, While we do not consider Monkeypox to be a sexually transmitted disease, the close contact and potential exposure to body fluids, including respiratory tract droplets, allows Monkeypox to be spread during sexual contact“.According toCDC, “It can also spread by touching objects, fabrics and surfaces used by someone with the virus and “contact with respiratory secretions”. Dr. Stanley Deresinski, a clinical professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Stanford Medicine said ,when asked about the way the virus spreads, “It can readily be spread through skin-to-skin contact, as occurs during sex. The virus has been reported to be present in semen, but the role of semen in transmission has not been demonstrated. Body fluids, including respiratory tract droplets, allow Monkeypox to be spread during sexual contact”.
